Tenth day hunger strike: 9 Djiboutian women on hunger strike to denounce Afar women rapes by Djiboutian Army.
On Day 10 hunger strike: The hunger strikers have now reached a very critical stage of their hunger strike: the tenth day. On the eighth day, already a hunger striker was evacuated because of her ill health. Theoretically a 70 kg adult who has not been malnourished has enough reserves for 70 to 80 days, on a daily intake of 1500 to 200 calories per day. In the first phase, from 1 to 3 days after body exhaust its reserves of glucose. The brain stops the secretion of insulin that has for role to convey glucose to the muscle. This is accompanied by significant and rapid weight loss, mainly due to loss of water and salt. After the first week the strikers start to feel ill. The symptoms are painful hunger and stomach cramps. In the second phase of 10 days: Where the 9 women are today. The body sets up adaptation mechanisms: the energy is derived from fat. The body resorts to its protein reserves for energy. The body is able to break down the proteins into their building blocks, the amino acids, and turns them into glucose. The body switches to an energy-saving regime that is similar to hibernation in the animal world. The heart rate drops, blood pressure is lowered and body temperature falls. The time of this adjustment varies depending on the initial weight of hunger striker. A skinny person will encounter problems earlier. Brain cells need a lot of glucose and to keep tap on it, it sends a signal that stop the release of insulin that convey glucose to the body. If the person suffers from diabetes,(s) he will face a lot of problems earlier. The hunger striker experience a continued weight loss, feeling weak sensation and cold settle. The drop in metabolism often leads to anxiety. You witness decreased muscle strength, increasing fatigue, dizziness, constipation, concentration difficulties. These symptoms are at work from day 10. We see the courage and determination of these 10 Djiboutian in their action and the harmful effects of the hunger strikeon a human being. The regime of Ismail Omar Guelleh has to answer to the demands of the Djiboutian women to seek justice for the rapes of Afar women.
