Ethiopia declared a state of emergency effective Saturday, 8th October this year, following months of often violent anti-government protests, especially in the restive Oromia region.
“A state of emergency has been declared because the situation posed a threat against the people of the country,” Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said on state-run television, the following day, Sunday. The Ethiopian Government estimates claim that around 40,000 workers at foreign companies have been affected by the disruptions that have rocked the East African nation; as cement, textile, flower, and agribusiness firms have been attacked.
