The body sets up adaptation mechanisms: the energy is derived from fat. The body resorts to its protein reserves for energy. The body is able to break down the proteins into their building blocks, the amino acids, and turns them into glucose. The body switches to an energy-saving regime that is similar to hibernation in the animal world. The heart rate drops, blood pressure is lowered and body temperature falls. The time of this adjustment varies depending on the initial weight of hunger striker.
